The Council at Jerusalem

Acts 15: 1-35

Context: 

Setting: Church in Antioch, where believers were first called Christians.

Antioch is becoming a place of diversity, inclusivity, equity which means members in their consist of Jews and Gentiles, different customs and traditions, and confusion about how to life this new way of life Jesus offers.

    People/Characters: Men from Judea (Jews), Paul, Barnabas, church in Antioch

Problem: Men from Judea are teaching new believers that they must follow the traditions of the law.

Chapter 15: 1-5 Summary

-      Men from Judea are telling brothers from the church in Antioch that they must be circumcised.

-      Think about:  How does the church of Antioch feel about being told they must be circumcised?

o   Confused

o   Scared

o   Frustrated

o   Disappointed

o   Hopeless

-        Circumcision is found in Genesis chapter 17. 

o   God is establishing his covenant with Abram and his family, God will be their God and Abram and his family will be His people.

o   God promises to give them land

o   God instructs Abram to have all the males 8 days or older to be circumcised, this would serve as a sign of the covenant between God is making with them. 

-        Paul and Barnabas disagree with the men from Judea and are sent to Jerusalem to meet with the apostles and elders and to discuss the issue.

-        The issue is discussed in Jerusalem and there is disagreement there as well.

-        VS 6:  The apostles and elders talked about the issue.

-        VS 7-9: Peter reminds them of what God revealed to him on the rooftop.  God’s promise of

redemption is for the Jews and the Gentiles. 

o   There is not distinction between Jew and Gentile

-        VS 10:  The Jews could not follow the law, why would be ask new believers to do it?

-        VS 11: We are saved through the grace of Jesus Christ

-        VS 19: We cannot make it hard for people to become a part of our church.

-        VS 20-21: Stay away from anything that has to do with idol worship.  This is what Moses has

been teaching from the beginning.

Communication is Key:

-        The council sends Paul and Barnabas back to Antioch with a letter to communicate the

decision of the council in Jerusalem. 

-        How do you think the church in Antioch reacted to the news?

o   Relieved

o   Hopeful

o   Confident

o   Clear

How does this apply to us today?

We must learn to see things in a new way. 

-        Instead of circumcision being a sign of the covenant between God and his people, it is now

the Holy Spirit that signifies belonging to the family of God.

o   The Holy Spirit changes us internally and those changes come out in how we live our lives. 

o   We no longer rely on our outward appearance to communicate who serve but it is our internal changes that demonstrate to others who we serve.

-       We cannot be stuck in the past when God is trying to do something new today.

o   This applies in every aspect of our lives:

§  In church: we should never be stuck in our church routine that we forget to discuss and more importantly, seek God for guidance.  That is what the early church did.

-        We are not saved by what people see us do, we are not saved by our actions.  We are saved by grace through Jesus Christ, that’s it. 

o   We cannot earn it by following rules or saying the right thing.

o   It is the grace of God that truly saves us and transforms us from the inside out.

Hechos 15: 1-35

Contexto:

Escenario: Iglesia en Antioquía, donde los creyentes fueron llamados cristianos por primera vez.

Antioquía se está convirtiendo en un lugar de diversidad, inclusión, equidad, lo que significa que

sus miembros son judíos y gentiles, diferentes costumbres y tradiciones, y confusión sobre cómo

Capítulo 15: 1-5 Resumen

- Hombres de Judea les dicen a los hermanos de la iglesia en Antioquía que deben circuncidarse.

- Piensa: ¿Cómo se siente la iglesia de Antioquía cuando le dicen que deben circuncidarse?

- La circuncisión se encuentra en Génesis capítulo 17.

o Dios está estableciendo su pacto con Abram y su familia, Dios será su Dios y Abram y su familia serán Su pueblo.

o Dios promete darles tierra

o Dios le ordena a Abram que circuncidará a todos los varones de 8 días o más, esto serviría como señal del pacto que Dios está haciendo con ellos.

- Pablo y Bernabé no están de acuerdo con los hombres de Judea y son enviados a Jerusalén para reunirse con los apóstoles y los ancianos y discutir el tema.

- El tema se discute en Jerusalén y allí también hay desacuerdos.

- VS 6: Los apóstoles y ancianos hablaron sobre el tema.

- VS 7-9: Pedro les recuerda lo que Dios le reveló en la azotea. La promesa de redención de Dios es para los judíos y los gentiles.

o No hay distinción entre judíos y gentiles.

- VS 10: Los judíos no podían seguir la ley, ¿por qué se les pediría a los nuevos creyentes que lo hicieran?

- VS 11: Somos salvos por la gracia de Jesucristo

- VS 19: No podemos dificultar que las personas se conviertan en parte de nuestra iglesia.

- VS 20-21: Aléjate de todo lo que tenga que ver con la adoración de ídolos. Esto es lo que Moisés ha estado enseñando desde el principio.

La comunicación es clave:

- El concilio envía a Pablo y Bernabé de regreso a Antioquía con una carta para comunicar la decisión del concilio en Jerusalén.

- ¿Cómo cree que reaccionó la iglesia de Antioquía ante la noticia?

¿Cómo se aplica esto a nosotros hoy?

Debemos aprender a ver las cosas de una manera nueva.

- En lugar de que la circuncisión sea un signo de la alianza entre Dios y su pueblo, ahora es el Espíritu Santo el que significa pertenecer a la familia de Dios.

o El Espíritu Santo nos cambia internamente y esos cambios se manifiestan en la forma en que vivimos nuestras vidas.

o Ya no dependemos de nuestra apariencia exterior para comunicar a quién servimos, sino que son nuestros cambios internos los que demuestran a los demás a quién servimos.

- No podemos quedarnos estancados en el pasado cuando Dios está tratando de hacer algo nuevo hoy.

o Esto se aplica en todos los aspectos de nuestras vidas:

 En la iglesia: nunca debemos quedar atrapados en nuestra rutina de la iglesia que nos olvidamos de discutir y, lo que es más importante, buscar la guía de Dios. Eso es lo que hizo la iglesia primitiva.

- No nos salvamos por lo que la gente nos ve hacer, no nos salvan nuestras acciones. Somos salvos por gracia a través de Jesucristo, eso es todo.

o No podemos ganarlo siguiendo reglas o diciendo lo correcto.

o Es la gracia de Dios la que verdaderamente nos salva y transforma de adentro hacia afuera.
